Not a good choice for kids with special needs August 31, 2010 E. Gross (Skokie, IL United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My son is 7 and is autistic. He loved the Leap Frog Text N Say, which looks like a BlackBerry. After I bought that toy, my son went from identifying 3 of 26 letters to identifying 23 of 26 letters. But he got bored with the "Bubble Letters" game on the Text N Say. I thought the Leapster Explorer would be the next step up.
The Alphabet Stew game is too hard for him AND my 5 year old daughter. My son is not dumb -- he can make it to level 14 on the Jewel Train game.
I was excited because there's a letter formation game as part of the "Create a Pet" game on the Leapster Explorer. Both of my children find handwriting challenging, so I thought this would be great -- it would make handwriting practice a game, so it would be fun. However, if you stray even the smallest distance from the line on the screen, you have to start over again. It's so frustrating, they don't play it.
In the same vein, I've had the "Mr. Pencil" game on order from Toys R Us (we had a gift card) since July. It is now the day before Sept. 1, and there is no sign of it.
I bought the Tinker Bell game. It is advertised as being for 5-9 year olds. It is way too hard for my 5 year old daughter. it doesn't get played with.
Worst of all are the "trailers" for other games. There's one for a "Wolverine" game. My son watched it and screamed "Turn it off! Turn it off! Put it away!", while sobbing.
There are a lot of families with children on the autism spectrum. The CDC says 1 in 150 kids is diagnosed as being on the spectrum. Leapster, if you would make your product accessible, you could make a lot of money. But as it is, my advice to my fellow parents of special needs kids is: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT.
Returning it !!! August 31, 2010 Melanie Raymond We recently purchased this device for our daughter. We were unable to review the device itself properly because the Connect Software was buggy and unable to initialize the system with any valid applications. Being a software engineer myself, and trying to get the system to communicate with a Macintosh or Windows computer was both frustrating and futile.
We have had no problem with the Connect Software for other Leapfrog products (Tag Junior, ClickStart, & MyPals). However, with the Explorer, there is not even a toll-free customer service number to call for assistance...
The device has now been returned, and we hope to have better luck with the MobiGo.
Love this for the most part. August 26, 2010 JC 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this as a birthday gift for my 4 year old. She loves it. Recently took a vacation with over 16 hours in the car each way. Brought the normal car load of toys to keep her occupied but she only wanted to play with the leapster. We have several games and she was able to just start playing with no help. Occasionally she needs help getting past a small part but overall she was learning a lot.
I agree with other reviews that the leaplets cost too much for what you get and the cards seem a little odd to have to purchase. We bought the train leaplet and she has already finished that game in two weeks, the sugar bugs game, which I feel is not worth the money, she seems to enjoy, we also purchased the animal flash-card leaplet. This flash-card leaplet is the only download that I feel has been worth the price. She learned a lot about animals and as we were going through the national park on vacation she was pointing out animals and telling us facts.
The only reason I marked 4 stars on the overall use of this toy was due to the leaplets. I can download apps for my phone for free or a couple of dollars that are just as good or better than 2/3 of the leaplets I have downloaded. I wish that leapster would have a way to set up an account where you could purchase the leaplets without having to first purchase a card with a code on the back. Very wasteful as far as packaging and if you don't have a card you have to wait to get one in the mail before downloading a new game unless you want to purchase a $25 game from the store.
Yes there are trailers on the game but my daughter has not yet asked for any of the games that are showing. Personally I would rather her be able to review a game prior to my spending $25 on a cartridge.
Difficulties, but great customer service August 18, 2010 Bekah Quimby 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My 3 year old daughter LOVES this product, especially since her 3 older cousins have a similar version. We tried the Leapster 2 first, and it was great. We upgraded to this, and for some reason it won't work with our computers, therefore we cannot connect to online material or download leaplets. We have a Vista 64 operating system (which is well beyond minimum requirements) and figured it might be due to this? My husband works in Computer Science and he still can't figure it out. Leapfrog customer service has been great working with this issue.
Bought it to hack it August 14, 2010 PhilKll 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
So far I love it! A while back I bought a Didj at a super-sale price. The Didj was my first attempt at hacking a Linux based device, and through that experience I learned a lot of new things about embedded hardware and Linux. When I heard the Explorer was going to have a lot in common with the Didj - that it was based on an embedded Linux operating system and had the same processor- I stepped up and got an Explorer to play with. I'm happy to say that I've learned even more, having poked and prodded at some of the inner workings of the Explorer, plus its been great deal of fun.
As for what I have learned, the Explorer is a lot better system than the Didj. Having looked over the source code for both (the underlying Linux kernel and associated programs are open source), this is a far more polished, modern and durable product. Not to mention the hardware upgrades, like more flash memory, more RAM, touchscreen, usb host, and a better OS boot system. While I'm not exactly a kid, I have found loads of enjoyment with this device, and have, in the spirit of it, learned a lot too.
